Remembering Chuck Cohen: A Legacy of Philanthropy and Community Support with Greater Love Outreach Phoenix (GLO Phoenix)

Updated: Sep 22

Chuck Cohen, longtime supporter of Greater Love Outreach Phoenix, remembered for his philanthropy and community impact.
Chuck Cohen is reading in his study.

How We First Met Chuck Cohen

Over 30 years ago, I met Chuck Cohen while canvassing door-to-door for environmental issues in Pittsburgh. That day, newscaster Patty Burns opened the door, with her husband Chuck—well-known through his work at Cohen & Grigsby—standing beside her. Our initial conversation about the cause soon turned into a meaningful discussion about nonprofit support and community giving. Patty and Chuck expressed a strong commitment to philanthropy, and it was then that I introduced them to Greater Love Outreach Phoenix (GLO Phoenix). They immediately connected with our mission, made a generous donation, and became steadfast supporters for decades.

A Legacy of Support and Community Impact

I had the privilege of spending time with Patty and Chuck in their home, where our conversations often touched on social impact and the importance of giving back. Even after Patty’s passing following her battle with cancer, Chuck remained a loyal friend and supporter of GLO Phoenix. His dedication never wavered, and his generosity helped us expand programs that provide essential support to our community—especially our bus pass program for justice-impacted individuals and families in Pittsburgh. His story reflects a true legacy of community impact.

Chuck’s Words of Wisdom and Solidarity

Just a few months ago, Desiree Joplin—our Director of Programming & Operational Strategy—and I sat down with Chuck to hear his reflections on supporting GLO Phoenix. We captured our discussion in this blog. His words continue to resonate with us:

“This is the purest form of charity I’ve ever seen. Every dollar makes a difference.”

Chuck also asked us to stand against anti-Semitism and reminded us of the importance of solidarity across communities:

“It means something to me that Pastor Robert honors that request and stands with Israel and the Jewish community, just as we’ve stood with the Black community for generations. That kind of solidarity is powerful—and necessary.”

These conversations reflect Chuck’s vision for nonprofit generosity and solidarity, values that will continue to inspire our organization and community partnerships.

Carrying His Legacy Forward

Though we grieve his passing, we at Greater Love Outreach Phoenix are deeply grateful for Chuck’s wisdom, philanthropy, and unwavering support. His philanthropy in Pittsburgh and commitment to equity will continue to guide our mission—whether through providing bus passes, removing barriers, or uplifting lives in our community and beyond.

Remembering Chuck Cohen: A Legacy of Support for GLO Phoenix. He is not only a supporter but also a true friend who believes in the power of giving back. His impact will live on in every life touched through GLO Phoenix, and we are honored to carry forward the legacy of honoring Pittsburgh philanthropist Chuck Cohen.
